OH! WHAT A PAIN… NECK

Los Chunguitos already sang it “Ay! How painful. Your love abandoned me.”

In this post I am not going to talk about lovesickness, but about neck pain, how to prevent it, some tips to relieve it at home and which of my massages will help you.

Raise your hand who hasn't ever had neck pain or cervical pain. They are usually caused by muscle tension or overload of the muscles in the area due to:

  • poor posture during the day or night

  • stress episodes

  • Repetitive movements

It is important that you know that you should visit the doctor if the pain occurs after an accident or blow, when it is frequent or chronic, if you have pathologies such as cervical herniated discs or if you have had neck pain for 7 days.

On the other hand, when the pain is sporadic or punctual, I want to give you some advice that will help you relieve it at home:

  • The heat relaxes the muscles, you can use the bags of seeds or the gelpack that are heated in the microwave. Do not forget to put a towel between the gelpack or bag of seeds and your skin, to avoid burns. You can put it 3 or 4 times a day, for 15 minutes

  • Take a hot shower, and if you have a bathtub, take a hot bath. And if you can add 6 drops of lavender essential oil to the bath, even better.

  • Give yourself a massage or if you live with someone, ask him or her to give it to you. Use sweet almond oil with marjoram or rosemary essential oil.

How to prevent neck pain?

Prevention is our best friend, so I am going to give you some tips for it:

1.- Take care of your posture and avoid repetitive movements

  • If you spend hours and hours in front of the computer, check that the upper part of the screen is at eye level, keep your back against the backrest, do not sit on the edge of the chair, and try to keep your feet on the the floor and the knees are at 90º.

  • I go down the street and I see everyone using their cell phones and not with their necks bent, the following. You should put the screen at eye level, do not bend your neck down.

  • If in your work you must carry heavy objects, you must hold them close to the body, when you pick them up from the ground, bend your knees, use your legs to lift them and keep your back straight. They should have given you an occupational risk prevention course, I know it's a pain in the ass, but it's your health, follow the recommendations they give you.

2.- Avoid carrying heavy objects, I see people with backpacks and bags that look like they carry stones... Oh my god!! Why do you need to carry so many things with you?

3.- Use a good pillow that fits your neck.

4.- Regularly perform exercises or stretching, preferably advised by a professional.

5.- Practice some sports activity on a regular basis. It will keep you in good shape and will also help you reduce day-to-day stress.

6.- Give yourself a good massage on a regular basis, they will help you reduce muscle tension and stress.
